On June 27, the Uni returned to Pitkin Avenue in Brownsville Brooklyn for a third time this year. BPL outreach librarian Leigh Hurwitz (also a longtime Uni volunteer and site manager!) distributed BPL Summer Reading info and signed people up for BPL library cards into the evening. Photos below, including some terrific mini book reviews and firemen at the Uni.

This deployment made possible in part by funds granted by the Charles H. Revson Foundation through the Neighborhood Plaza Partnership.

We are serious about data at the Uni—Leigh works the clipboard like a rock star.

NYFD showed up to teach about fire safety and let kids explore a fire engine. The guys stopped by the Uni.

Here’s how our mini book reviews work…

Uni Pitkin Ave 3

…folks pick a book, read it, and write a postcard sized review…

…and pose for a Polaroid photo with their book.

The reviews travel across the city on the side of our reading room cart.

Leslie convinced this fireman to write a review. Serious role model.

What I love about our book reviews: a chance to identify yourself as a reader in your community. And the chance to focus.

Focus.
