Many NYC kids who live in low-income neighborhoods report that there is little to do over the summer, especially when camps and cultural institutions are out of reach. To help fix that, for six weeks this summer, we created a safe place to hang out and learn next to basketball courts where the Police Athletic League (PAL) offers sports activities. We offered a playful, pop-up learning environment, with LEGO, Magna-Tiles, Imagination Playground blocks, books, drawing, puzzles, and more, to more than 400 kids at eight different New York City Housing Authority developments across the city (Tompkins, Butler, Wagner, Castle Hill, St. Nicholas, Brownsville, Bushwick and Queensbridge Houses). This work builds on our work at NYCHA houses last summer and was made possible with funding from the Building Healthy Communities/Mayor’s Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety through the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice, and additional support was provided by WellMet Philanthropy.
