Street Lab helps teen residents of New York City public housing create their own pop-ups
This summer, 30 young residents of New York City public housing received Street Lab kits to help them create pop-ups that are transforming public spaces in and around NYCHA housing into places of community, creativity, and healing. The youth are members of the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety’s Youth Leadership Council (YLC), and they have an inspiring vision for their neighborhood. We started with planning sessions at our warehouse, followed by a guided demonstration at Queensbridge Houses, and then four pop-ups in October at Jefferson, West Brighton, Morris and Whitman Houses, led entirely by the youth.
This collaboration is made possible with support from the Center for Justice Innovation’s Neighborhood Safety Initiatives. Keep an eye out for more pop-ups from the YLC in neighborhoods across the city!
