Street Lab helping Washington Heights community build momentum towards a pedestrian plaza on Audubon Ave

Jun 15, 2025

Street Lab works with communities across New York City to create and support new Open Streets in low to moderate income areas of the city. In 2024, we began an effort to support a new Open Street on Audubon Ave in Washington Heights, offering Street Lab pop-ups and a community design process for a mural that we painted with volunteers, students, and the NYC DOT Commissioner. In 2025 we’re back, activating the street with Street Lab pop-ups twice a week in June, including BUILD, READ, DRAW, PLAY, and IMAGINE which invites residents to express their hopes and ideas for the future of Audubon Ave, as they build momentum towards the establishment of a permanent pedestrian plaza. We also brought our partner WNYC to give residents a chance to tell their stories on the radio, which aired on June 10.

Street Lab’s IMAGINE program invites passersby to a conversation about Audubon Ave, and Street Lab also hosted WNYC on the Open Street, giving residents a chance to tell their story on the radio.
